DEGREE COURSES FOR HI - Prospectus 2008-09

1. COURSES
   1.1 The courses on offer are:
              i. B.Sc. (Computer Science) (HI)              :      3 year course having 6 semesters.
              ii. Bachelor of Fine Arts (HI)                  :      4 year course having 8 semesters.
   
    1.2 The curriculum for the above courses consists of theory and practical, with stress on practical.
    1.3 On successful completion of the course the candidates will be awarded the Bachelor degree by the University of Kerala.

2. RESERVATION OF SEATS
   3.1 Reservation for SC/ST shall be as per University norms from time to time.

3. ELIGIBILITY
    3.1 Admission is restricted to those who are hearing impaired, as defined in "The Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities,           Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995".
          Hearing Impairment means loss of 60 dB or more in the better ear in the conversational range of frequencies.

    3.2 Candidates seeking admission to the degree programmes should have passed the Plus Two / Pre degree or its equivalent from any Board           or University in India, recognized as equivalent for admission to a degree course in the University of Kerala or equivalent of 10+2           education in India or abroad

    3.3 Applicants must use speech and residual hearing and/or speech reading as the primary mode of communication.

4. APPLICATION FORM
    4.1 Application Form and Prospectus is common for all the courses. Application Form and Prospectus can be had from The Director,           National Institute of Speech & Hearing, Karimanal P O, Thiruvananthapuram, 695 583 in person on payment of Rs 100/-. Those who           would like to get the application by post should enclose a Demand Draft for Rs 125/- payable at Trivandrum, drawn in favour of           Director, NISH, Trivandrum along with their request.

5. SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS
    5.1 Candidates must clearly indicate their choice of course in the order of preference (as 1, 2, 3) in the application form.

    5.2 Application duly filled and along with the following certificates should reach the Director on or before July 28,2008. Late application           will be summarily rejected.       
         5.2.1 Photocopy of mark-list of qualifying examination.
         5.2.2 Photocopy of certificates of disability.
         5.2.3 True copy of the relevant page of SSLC showing date of birth.
         5.2.4 SC/ST candidates must enclose true copy of community certificate for claiming reservation under SC/ST quota.

    5.3 Application sent by post should be registered with acknowledgement due. Application may also be submitted in person at the           Institute.

   5.4 Application received after the due date and those not accompanied by required details / documents will not be considered. Candidates          are advised not to enclose originals of any documents.

6. MODE OF SELECTION
    6.1 Candidates seeking admission to the degree programmes will have to appear for a Common Aptitude Test and a Skill Test specific for           each course.
    6.2 A minimum marks in the tests is necessary for admission to the course.  
    6.3 Further the selection will be made as per rank list arrived at as follows:
    
     6.3.1. B.Sc. (Computer Science) (HI)

  • Selection to B.Sc (Computer Science) (HI) will be made on the basis of marks obtained in the qualifying examination and aggregate of marks obtained in the Aptitude and Skill tests.
  • 50% weightage will be given for marks of qualifying exam and 50% weightage will be given for aggregate marks of the tests.
  • If the ranking marks as obtained above happen to be the same for two or more candidates, the ranking will be done based on marks scored in the Skill test.
    While applying the criterion as specified above, if the marks scored in the Skill test happen to be same, the age of the candidates will be the criterion for ranking.

     6.4 Separate rank lists will be published for each course.
    6.5 Candidates must produce originals of all documents at the time of interview. Those who fail to produce the originals at the time of           interview will not be considered for admission.
    6.6 No change of course will be permitted once admitted.

7. FEES

    7.1 Tuition Fee                    Rs.5,000/- per semester
          Caution deposit             Rs.2,000/- (payable at the time of admission. Refundable on completion of course)
    7.2 Tuition fee is payable at the beginning of each semester. Further the candidate will have to pay the examination fee as prescribed by the           University from time to time.
     7.3 Fee concession will be available for those deserving candidates as per the decision of the Project Board.
     7.4 The admitted candidates can apply for the National scholarship for persons with disabilities by the Ministry of Social Justice and             Empowerment, Government of India, SC/ST scholarship and the State level Scholarship given by the Social Welfare department.             NISH will provide assistance to the candidates in applying for the scholarships.

8. CONDUCT OF EXAMINATION

    8.1 The admitted candidates will be evaluated continuously through each semester. Apart from this there will be a Semester examination              at the end of every Semester.

   8.1.1. B.Sc. (Computer Science) (HI)
              Semester examinations for the odd semesters namely the first, third and fifth semester will be conducted by the Head of the               Institute/Principal of the college, the marks of which will be recorded in the consolidated mark list issued to the candidate on               completion of the course.
              For the even semesters i.e.; the second, fourth and sixth semester, the University of Kerala will conduct the Semester examinations.

    8.1.2. Bachelor of Fine Arts (HI)
              The University will conduct the Semester examinations for the second and the eighth semester.
              Semester examinations for the first, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh semesters will be conducted by the Head of the               Institute/Principal of the college, the marks of which will be recorded in the consolidated mark list issued to the candidate on               completion of the course.

9. OTHER CONDITIONS

     9.1 Candidates selected for interview will be intimated by individual memos.

     9.2 If any information given in the application by the candidate is found to be false on verification at the time of interview or even at a              later stage the candidate will forfeit his /her claim for admission.

     9.3 Candidates called for interview should report at the specified venue and time with the originals of all documents failing which he/she              will forfeit his/her claim for admission. No change of date, time or venue of interview or extension of time for producing originals of              documents will be allowed under any circumstance.

     9.4 No TA will be given for attending the test/interview.

     9.5 All the candidates admitted to the degree programme will abide by the rules and regulations issued from time to time by NISH.
            (a) All students shall wear the prescribed uniforms during the theory and lab session as the case may be.
            (b) Ragging in any form is strictly forbidden inside the campus.
            (c) Smoking is strictly prohibited within the campus.
            (d) Students are requested to cooperate in maintaining the building and campus clean.
            (e) Late entry to classroom or laboratory will not be permitted.
            (f) Every student will be issued an Identity Card, which must be prominently displayed by the students inside the campus.
            (g) Directions from the staff in respect of academic matters and general discipline must be strictly complied with by all students.
            (h) Leave of absence will be granted only on medical grounds. However, such leaves will be considered only for the purpose of                  granting condonation of shortage of attendance.


10. BOARDING AND LODGING

      10.1 Hostel facilities are not available at NISH and the students will have to make their own arrangements for boarding and lodging.

11. Any other details not specifically covered by these clauses will be decided by the undersigned and such decision will be final.
