Course
  • The curriculum consists of theory and practical classes in the field of Speech - Language Pathology, Audiology and allied subjects such as Psychology, Linguistics, Electronics etc.

  • The candidates admitted would be trained in the assessment, management and rehabilitation of persons with speech, language and hearing disorders such as Aphasia, Learning Disability and other childhood communication disorders resulting from hearing loss, mental retardation, cerebral palsy etc.

  • The total duration of the Degree Program is 4 years which includes one academic year internship.

    Number of Seats
  • Total no: of seats for the course is 20.(enhancement to 30 expected from Kerala University)
    Supernumerary seats for foreign students is 3.
    Seat earmarked for candidates sponsored by Union Territory of Lakshwadeep is 1.
  • Fifty per cent of the seats(ie; 10 seats) are merit seats. The remaining fifty per cent seats (ie; 10 seats) are payment seats. One seat from the payment seats is NRI seat.

    Reservation of Seats
  • Twenty per cent of the total merit seats (ie 2 seats) is reserved for candidates belonging to SC/ST.
  • One seat from the merit seats is reserved for persons with disability as specified in the PWD Act 1995.
  • If any seat remains unfilled in the above two categories, the same will go to the general merit.
  • The seats reserved for foreign students and for candidate sponsored by the Union Territory will not be filled up by other candidates.

    Eligibility
  • Only Indian citizens of Kerala origin are eligible for admission under the merit seat category.
  • Minimum educational requirement for admission to this course will be a pass in Plus Two / Pre degree/ 12th standard or its equivalent from any board or university in India, recognized as equivalent for admissions to a degree Course in the University of Kerala. The candidate must have secured a minimum of 50 % marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics / Biology. For SC/ST and persons with disabilities the minimum marks is a pass.
  • Age must be between 17 - 25 years on the last day set for receiving applications. The upper age limit is relaxable by two years in the case of SC/ST and Persons with disabilities

    Application Forms
  • Application form and prospectus can be had from the Director National Institute of Speech and Hearing, Karimanal P O, Trivandrum-695 583 either in person on payment of Rs.400/-. For SC/ST and Persons with Disabilities the cost is Rs.100/-. Those who like to get application by post should enclose a Demand Draft for RS.450/- (Rs.150/- for SC/ST and for Persons with Disabilities) drawn in favour of Director, NISH, Trivandrum along with their request.
  • Application form can be downloaded from the website www.nishindia .org in which case the application must be accompanied by a Demand Draft of Rs.400/- ( Rs. 100/-for SC/ST and Persons with Disabilities). in favour of Director, NISH

    Submission of Application Forms
  • Application in original duly filled and with the following certificates should reach the Director on or before 30 June, 2008. Late applications will be summarily rejected.
     
  • True copy of the relevant page of SSLC showing date of birth
  • Photocopy of mark list of qualifying examination
  • SC/ST candidates must enclose true copy of community certificate for claiming reservation under SC/ST quota.
  • Candidates claiming reservation under disability must enclose true copy of the certificate of disability issued by Medical Board/ State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities
  • Candidates applying for NRI seats must enclose declaration by the NRI to establish his/her relationship with the candidate.
  • Candidates applying for seats reserved for foreign students must enclose proof of nationality.
  • Application sent by post should be registered with acknowledgement due. Application may also be submitted in person at the Institute.
  • Application received after the due date and those not accompanied by required documents /details will not be considered. Candidates are advised not to enclose originals of any documents.

    Mode of Selection
  • Selection will be made purely on the basis of marks obtained in the qualifying examination.
  • The ranking marks will be derived by adding the marks of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/Biology converted to the base of 100 to the total marks obtained by the applicant converted to the base of 100.
  • If index marks as obtained above happens to be same for two or more candidates, the ranking will be done based on aggregate of subject marks.
  • While applying the criteria as specified above, if the aggregate of subject marks happen to be same, the marks for Mathematics/Biology will be the criterion for ranking.
  • Candidates must produce originals of all documents at the time of the interview. Those who fail to produce the originals at the time of the interview will not be considered for admission.

    Fees

  • Caution fee is payable at the time of admission only. Tuition and special fee are payable at the beginning of each academic year. Further the student has to pay the examination fee as prescribed by the university from time to time.
  • For NRI seats the candidate has to pay a non refundable amount of $ 3000/- towards infrastructure development fund at the time of admission.
  • For seats reserved for foreign students ( students who have completed qualifying examination outside India) the tution fee and payment towards infrastructure development fund will be as follows:
     
  • For Indian nationals the fee will be same as that for NRI seats, ie, tution fee is Rs 70,000/- per year and payment towards infrastucture development fund is US $3000/-
     
  • For foreign students from the SAARC & African countries the fee is two times that for NRI seats, ie tuition fee is Rs140,000 per year and payment towards infrastructure development fund is US $ 3000/-
     
  • For foreign nationals outside SAARC countries the fee is three times that for NRI seats, ie, tuition fee is Rs 210,000 per year and payment towards infrastructure development fund is US$ 3000/-
     
  • In addition to above all foreign students have to pay special fee and caution deposit as specified for other categories.
  • For seat earmarked for candidate sponsored by Union Territory of Lakshwadweep the fee will be that for merit seat.

    Conduct of Examinations
  • The admitted candidates will be evaluated continuously throughout the academic year. Apart from this there would be one pre mid term,one mid term and one post mid term examinations. The final examination would be conducted by the University of Kerala.
  • Each candidate has to undergo one academic year internship after sucessful completion of the course.

    Issue of Degree
  • Successful candidates will be awarded the Bachelor Degree by the University of Kerala.

     

    Other Conditions
  • Candidates selected for interview will be intimated by individual memos.
  • If any information given in the application by the candidate is found to be false on verification at the time of the interview or even at a later stage the candidate will forfeit his/her claim for admission.
  • Candidates called for the interview should report at the specified venue and time with the originals of all the documents failing which he/she will forfeit his/her claim for admission. No change of date, time or venue of interview or extension of time for producing originals of documents will be allowed under any circumstances.
  • No TA will be given for attending the interview.
  • All candidates admitted to the course must execute an agreement that if he/she happens to discontinue the course at any time after the closure of admission, he/she will have to pay the full tution and special fee for the remaining period also.
  • All candidates admitted to the Course will have to abide by the rules and regulations issued for time to time by NISH.
  • Ragging in any form is prohibited inside the campus.
  • All students are requested to follow the directions of the staff in academic matters and general discipline must be strictly followed by all the students.
  • Leave of absence will be granted only on medical grounds. However, such leave will be considered only for the purpose of granting condonation of shortage of attendance.

     

    Boarding and Lodging
  • Hostel facilities are not available at NISH and students will have to make their own arrangements for boarding and lodging.
