Degree Courses for the Hearing Impaired

Students with hearing impairment have no higher education facilities at present in the State. There are thirteen Special Schools in the State where around 600 hearing impaired students appear for SSLC and around 175 students appear for plus two/higher secondary examinations. The students who pass the higher secondary examination have no facility for higher education as there is no special degree program. The only option for them is to join the regular degree course which they are unable to successfully complete. It is an injustice to these students to force them undergo the regular curriculum having gone through a special curriculum right from primary school level to higher secondary level. They require degree courses the curriculum of which meets their unique educational needs.
The Degree Courses for Hearing Impaired students is an attempt to provide stress free higher education facilities to hearing impaired students. The courses offered are:

  • B.Sc (Computer Science)(HI)          -  3 year course consisting of 6 semesters
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts (HI)              -  4 year course consisting of 8 semesters

The courses are the first of its kind in the State and are affiliated to the Kerala University. The courses will provide

  • Highly job oriented curriculum
  • Computer aided teaching methods
  • Appropriate teaching environment
  • Suitable curriculum

The curriculum and syllabus for the courses is thoughtfully prepared to suit the special language needs of the hearing impaired. The curriculum consists of theory and practical with more stress on practical.
